7 Reasons to Reread a Book Today
I'll be honest: I'm sick of being told the next big thing is the next big thing. What about rereading a book for a change? Here are seven reasons to embrace a reread as your next read:
Books love to be rediscovered. Every time you crack open an old fave, you bring a new set of life experiences to the table.
Rereading is green. Walk the walk and recycle/reuse with a book hiding on the back shelf.
Sometimes, lazy is good. Call me lazy, but every once in a while, there's something very satisfying about throwing yourself back in an utterly familiar world.
Books deserve a second chance. That book you once threw against the wall in disgust? Could be you'll love it the second time around...you'll never know if you don't try!
Everything old is new again. Your superior knowledge of the classics could just inform your reading of the newest book du jour.
The familiar keeps you sharp. I never fail to discover something new in an already-read book. I think of rereading as the mental equivalent of Sudoku puzzles, but with more story and less tedious math.
Books have been there all along. Nothing like a good reread to remind you of how far you've come (or what it was like back then).
Want to revisit your favorite books, authors and heroines (and meet a few you haven't encountered before)? The Heroine's Bookshelf (Harper, October 2010) turns to classic heroines and their equally admirable authors to teach today’s women how to best tap into their inner strengths and live life with intelligence, grace, vitality and aplomb. This collection of unforgettable characters—including Anne Shirley, Jo March, Scarlett O’Hara, and Jane Eyre—and outstanding authors—like Jane Austen, Harper Lee, and Laura Ingalls Wilder—is an impassioned look at literature’s most compelling heroines, both on the page and off.Learn more about The Heroine's Bookshelf and Erin Blakemore at http://www.theheroinesbookshelf.com
